SEO or PPC

Posted on 16th September 2011

There are many methods which can be used to help promote your affiliate site, the 2 most popular being SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and PPC (Pay Per Click). A question that can quite commonly see being asked and discussed is “What works best – PPC or SEO?”
Unfortunately the answer to this question is not straight forward as there are pros and cons for both methods.

Since the big Google Panda update, and it’s a certainty that there will be more algorithm changes on the way, SEO strategies will need to keep changing to keep up with them. SEO is still an important part of a marketing strategy, as getting it right will bring the organic search traffic. If you know that you’re site has unique and quality content, but you are still not seeing the results then there are some easy aspects of SEO that you can look at.

  • Do you have too many of the same keywords repeated? This could be seen by Google as keyword stuffing, and could either lower your ranking or worse; prevent your page or site from being indexed.
  • While Google have never released what makes up the criteria for their search algorithms, they do regularly publish guidelines that sites should follow. Make sure that your site is in these guidelines.
  • While there is no official standard for the amount of times that keywords or keyword phrases should be used within articles and content, a regular rule of thumb is to make sure that they are within 2%.

If you are doing all of these things and you still find that your site isn’t performing to its full potential then it would definitely be worth trying PPC. There are several advantages to using PPC, which are particularly useful if the website that you have is new.

  • Using PPC you don’t have to worry about how algorithm changes will affect your sites position in the SERP’s.
  • If you have made sure that your Adwords ads are targeted towards your target audience, you will be sure that your site is going to reach their attention.
  • PPC is a great way to get your site noticed quickly, which can be very handy if the product that you are promoting is time sensitive or seasonal.
  • If a site is brand new, then PPC is a great way to get traffic to your site while you wait for Google to index your site and you work on the SEO to get good SERP’s ranking.

The downside for PPC is that, as the name suggests, you will need to pay for it. For new sites, and in particular new affiliates, the only way you will find out what will work is through trial and error. If you are not careful then you could end up losing money that you can’t afford to lose.

In all honesty I don’t think that either SEO or PPC are better than each other. Both require some research and learning to get right; and even then there can be unexpected factors which you can only get through by doing them. My opinion would be to start off by learning SEO, because it is free to do and implement (unless you hire an SEO specialist). Also knowledge of SEO will assist you with PPC. Both have a strong emphasis on having the right keywords. Some of the most successful campaigns will make use of both.
